Trip Overview

The Nar Phu valley trekking with Himalayan Alpine Adventure takes place in the Annapurna Circuit of Western Nepal located in the remote region of Upper Manang. The Nar Phu region is recently opened tourist destination in the year 2002 and is a most remote part of the country which is still untouched by today’s civilization. The trekking adventures talks place in a mixed faraway village of Nar and Phu of upper Manang accompanied narrow canyons, beautiful forests, gigantic rock establishments, caravans of yaks, Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and antique Himalayan culture of ancient Tibet inhabitants. The travelers reach to this antique domain of untouched Tibetan Buddhist civilization by traveling through Annapurna circuit passing through the bridge over the Marshyandi River to the steep portals of Nar Phu valley then entering the slender forested valley leading towards ancient villages, high altitude yak grazing pastures, and antique Buddhist Tibetan establishments and so on.

The travelers will have the chance to visit the Buddhist pilgrims traveling towards Phu valley to the renowned Buddhist monastery of Tashi Lha Khang and greet Rinpoche Sonam Karma Lama and spending times in the region of colorful pretty villages of mud and stone mixed in antique Tibetan decorations of colors, designs, flags, and others. The travelers then move forward crossing the Kang La Pass from Nar Valley till the village of Ngwal returning back to trails of Annapurna Circuit downwards through Lower Mustang. The Nar Phu Valley is occupied by the thin population of traditional Bhotia people of Tibetan ethnicity. They have a fame that they were not affected when Nepal Government closed borders with Tibet because of the difficult circuitous path leading towards Tibet had declined the salt trade business of Bhotias of Nar Phu Valley with Tibet instead they go for the Yak rearing and animal husbandry making it their basic livelihood.

The Nar Phu valley trekking takes place in the Annapurna circuit trekking route where the travelers take a ride from Kathmandu to Besisahar by private or local vehicle. Then travelers can start trekking or can take a drive to Chame from where they reach the entrance of the adventure and begin the Nar Phu valley trekking. The travelers reach the Chame Koto village which is main entrance gate of Nar Phu valley where the travelers can do their sightseeing of the valley of Na Phu. After crossing the Nar Phu valley the travelers cross the Kangla Pass that joins the Manang village. The travelers can continue their trek to high Thorong La of Annapurna circuit or can return to down same way end in Besisahar back to Pokhara or Kathmandu.

The Nar Phu valley trekking is the unusual trekking route traveling through the most remote zone of Annapurna and Upper Manang which is still untouched by the civilization where the population still lives the ancient way of life of Tibetan Buddhist ethnicity. The Nar Phu Valley is situated in the north of Manang crossing the high Himalayan pass of Kang La Pass with delightful foothill trails to Annapurna massifs. The Kang La pass connects Nar valley with Manang and traditional Bhotia villages of Neyshang Valley. The Nar Phu valley is encompassed with high snow Himalaya peaks, ancient villages, and high altitude grazing settlements. The region of Nar Phu is a hidden valley consisting of medieval Tibetan culture living in untouched state and antiqueness surrounded by mountains and great alpine sceneries.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Meet at Kathmandu Airport
We will meet you at the Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer you to your hotel. When you have had time to settle in and freshen up after your long flight, you will be invited to visit our office for a briefing on your programme. During this visit, we will help you check your equipment and facilitate the processing of other necessary items such as National Park Permits etc.

Day 02: A full day’s sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley
After breakfast, our guide will accompany you on a tour around the Kathmandu valley. You will visit the Hindu temple complex at Pashupatinath (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and the biggest Buddhist Stupa at Boudhanath. You will also visit Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple, a 2000-year-old temple. On your return to your hotel, you will have time to explore the local area, have dinner and perhaps take a leisurely stroll through the famous Durbar Square. Overnight at hotel.

Day 03: Drive Kathmandu to Syange/ Jagat (1100m) Early morning drive
to Besisahar/Bhulbhule along the Prithvi Highway. From Besisahar or Bhulbhule take a local jeep to Syange. The drive has views of the river, greenery, local villages, and beautiful mountain scenery. From Syange trek to Jagat. Overnight in the guesthouse. If the drive is running late we can stay in Syange.

Day 04: Syange/Jagat trekking to Dharapani (1960m)
After breakfast, we start the walk through the jungle. From Chamje the trail goes along the banks of the Marshyandi River, mostly climbing before we arrive in Tal. From here we enter Manang district and the trail continues through barley, rice and potato fields, and pine forests, past the village of Kodo, taking us to Dharapani, which is one of the bigger villages in the Manang valley. Overnight in Dharapani.

Day 05: Dharapani trekking to Koto: (2670m)
Today the trail climbs along the mule track through a fir forest and then for a time follows the river amongst the higher oak and maple trees. On the way, you will have spectacular views of views of major Himalayan peaks. Overnight in Koto.

Day 06: Koto trekking to Dharmashala (3300m).
We start our Nar Phu Valley trekking from Koto today; we will walk along a steep and narrow path through the dense forest. After crossing the river the trek leads to Nar Phu Valley, passing beautiful pine forest with a wide waterfall. Before arriving in Dharmashala, we will see several small shelters (caves and a pilgrim’s “Dharmashala”). Overnight camp at Dharmashala.

Day 07: Dharamshala trekking to Kayang (3560m)
The trail climbs up the valley along the small river before arriving at Meta (3700m), a non-permanent winter settlement of Nar. The trail passes by white rocks, low shrubs, junipers, and scattered evergreen. We have one of the best mountain views on the way. After passing the Junam we will arrive at Chako, formerly a Khampa settlement. Overnight at Kayang.

Day 08: Kayang trekking to Phu village (4200m)
Today we will walk steeply downhill along the river bank and past the submarine rock with a small campsite. Good views of chortens, along with a canyon and gorges, take us to the Phu gate from where we can see the three villages of Phu. Overnight at camp.

Day 09: Rest at Phu village for acclimatization and to explore
Phu Valley Again walking up and then coming back down is better than just resting in high altitude; we can walk up the valley to the summer grazing settlement at Ngoru, where we can spend time interacting with local people and visit Gompa. Overnight at camp.

Day 10: Phu village trekking to Nar (4150m)
Today we will trek back to Phu gate, Khyang, Chyarkha, and Junam to reach Nar. Along the way, we’ll get to see some beautiful gorges and some breathtaking scenery. We will pass wonderfully painted, bamboo-topped chortens and arrive at Nar gates on the top of the hill. Overnight in camp at Nar.

Day 11: Nar trekking to Kang La Phedi (4500m)
Today is an easy, short, trekking day so we can explore more of Nar Village in the morning and can trek to Kangla Phedi, the trail going through a grazing field with a small stream on the left. Mountains are on both sides of the stream. On the left, breathtaking views of Pisang Peak.Overnight at the campsite of Kang La Phedi.

Day 12: Kang La Phedi to Kang La Pass (5315m), trek to Ngawal (3675m)
We start early morning today for the spectacular Kang La Pass which provides the magnificent view of Pisang Peak, Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak and the airport at Hongde. After crossing the Kang La Pass we will head to Ngawal, a wonderful old village of cobbled streets, prayer wheels and beautiful architecture.

Day 13: Ngawal Trekking to Manang (3570m)
We will walk through a flat valley along the banks of the Marshyandi River. On the way, we will pass pine forest, farming terraces and the beautiful village of Braga. En route we can visit Braga monasteries and view the Annapurna range and Tilicho Peak, which are closer. Overnight in Manang.

Day 14: Manang trekking to Letdar (4250m)
The trail moves through alpine pastures to scrubby forests of juniper and rose. Leaving the Marshyandi the trail ascends up to Tenki. From here we continue to ascend to Letdar via Yak Kharka.

Day 15: Letdar trekking to Phedi (4420m) or High Camp (4600m)
From here the trail continues to climb along the banks of the Jorsang Khola. It is sometimes possible to see herds of blue mountain sheep. Stay overnight at Phedi or continue climbing up to High Camp.

Day 16: Phedi or High Camp trekking to Muktinath (3800m)
The views from the trail and from the pass are outstanding; you can see the long great barrier ridge of Gangapurna, Annapurna, Thorong Peak, and Khatung Kang peak. We ascend steeply to High Camp at 4590m, then along an undulating trail to the flat top of Thorong La (5416m). From here the trail descends steeply down to Muktinath. This is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus. It is also home to many ethnic Tibetans and holy Buddhists.

Day 17: Muktinath trekking to Jomsom (2715m) via Kagbeni (2810m)
The trail gradually goes down to Jharkot with the picturesque kani (large Gompa). From here the trail strolls among meadows, streams, poplar and fruit trees, finally, we arrive at Kagbeni, a gateway to Upper Mustang. After lunch in Kagbeni, we continue trekking to Jomsom through windy trails along the Kali Gandaki Valley. Overnight at Jomsom.

Day 18: Jomsom flight to Pokhara Early morning take a flight to Pokhara, afternoon free on your own.Hotel.

Day 19: Pokhara to Kathmandu Drive or fly out to Kathmandu.
In the evening join a cultural show and Nepali dinner. Hotel.

Day 20: Final Departure We will take you to Kathmandu airport to catch your flight home
