Mera Peak climbing with ADVENTURE BEYOND THE LIMIT.
Mera Peak 6467 m is regarded as the highest official trekking peak in Nepal. It lies in the Himalaya, in the Everest region of Nepal. Mera Peak rises to the south of Mt Everest and dominates the beautiful and remote valleys of Hinku and Hunku. The ascent to this peak is made from the Mera La pass 5415m on the northern face which connects the underpopulated valley of Hunku to the Hinku. In the Khumbu Himalaya, climbing Mt Mera Peak is high enough to be seriously challenging but does not require any serious mountaineering knowledge. The ascent of the peak is technically straightforward, however, the heavy snow and the maze of crevasses can make the way longer to the summit. To climb this mountain, it helps if you have some previous climbing experience. Climbing Mera Peak is an opportunity for all experienced trekkers and climbers who dream of standing on a Himalayan summit; there is the possibility of experiencing a sense of great achievement within the shortest possible time frame.
The first ascent was on May 20, 1953, by Col. Jimmy Robert and Sen Tenjing. The region was first explored extensively by a British expedition following the ascent of Mt Everest. Members of those teams included Sir Edmund Hillary, Eric Shipton, and George Lowe. Jimmy Robert (1916-1997) was probably the person who can take most of the credit for establishing the trekking industry in Nepal in early 1960,s. He was posthumously awarded the “Sagarmatha” Everest National Award by the government in May 2005.
The view from the summit is one of the finest in the Himalaya with five 8000 m peaks visible: Mt Everest, Mt Lhotse, Mt Cho Oyu, Mt Makalu, and Mt Kanchenjunga, as well as other Himalayan peaks linked below.
The standard route from the north involves high altitude glacier walking. The difficulty of reaching this elevation may be its biggest danger but good weather and snow conditions are, of course, necessary for safety and success. The west and south faces of the peak offer more difficult technical routes. For experienced climbers it is a technically straightforward ascent, the main hurdle being proper acclimatization to the high altitude. This makes Mt Mera Peak a very popular destination, with many adventure tour companies offering guided trips to the mountain for clients with little or no mountaineering experience. All climbers are recommended to partake in fitness and altitude training before attempting an ascent.
